Entry fees for AVTC members:  free for our race but athletes pay for their own entry into any other races.

Non-club members can still enter our race or other races on Vancouver Island, but they will pay the non-member fee, which is always a bit higher. 

Races are open to those born in 2000 or before, and also to any adults of any age.  Races length varies with age and location.

new members very welcome!  You can come once to try it out, and then if you want to continue coming, please register with Dave or Jill Sherlock.  There is a registration paper to fill out, and a registration fee of $25 is due at that time.  That fee will allow an athlete to attend all of the practices, which go until November, and cover the entry fee into our annual Cross Country Race at Sproat Park on September 21.

Cross country is a great way to get into better shape.  Cardio training is a base for all other types of training and fitness, and is important not only for track and field events, but for all other sports activities.  Athletes who can not come out regularly are still welcome to come when they are able, and do not have to enter any races if they don’t want to!

Congratulations to coach Denise Clements who made a Canadian record in Weight Throw in her master’s age category at the Peninsula meet.

Duncan signup sheet is in the Track Room.  This is a sticker meet and your club registration fee covers the cost of this meet.  It is also the trials for the Zone 6 Summer Games Team. (Summer Games are for ages 14-15, and held every two years) but those athletes are already pre-registered.

We are hoping that lots of athletes can attend this meet because it is always a fun one.  If athletes want to go but parents are unable to take them, please indicate this on the sign-up sheet.  We will endeavor to organize car-pooling and accommodations.  The money from the Tag Days will be used to support hotel costs for those who need it.  Talk to Dave Sherlock or me if this is needed.

Club BBQ for Families (info from last week)

AVTC has an annual BBQ in June, usually at the end of the regular meet season.  This year, there is a meet in Courtney on June 28-29 and Nanaimo on July 11-12, but despite that, executive decided to have our BBQ on Thursday, June 12.  It is for the whole family, and one of the primary activities of the gathering is to recognize and thank these volunteer coaches for the tremendous amount of time and energy that they have invested in our children. Each family is asked to bring a large salad, dessert or appetizer. There is a signup sheet in the Track Room for this event, which we hope that EVERYBODY can attend!  In case of horrid weather, we will reschedule this for the following week.  Check the club website. Thursday, June 12 (mark your calendars!)

4:30  -  practice for the athletes

5:30  -  Creek Run for the athletes and any siblings or parents that would like to come

(you can walk the 2km round trip through the woods.  Wear suitable shoes.)

6:15ish  -  Dinner outside Glenwood.  Bring chairs and/or blankets!

The club provides the burgers and drinks, and you provide the rest…see above

7:00ish  -.Recognition of Coaches.  The club gives each coach a small token of our        appreciation, however, if you want to get your child to make a nice card for whichever coaches they have been working with, I’m sure that would also be appreciated.

7:30ish  -  Game of Capture the Flag for all parents, athletes, coaches and siblings.

1. Peninsula one day meet (to make up for the snowy day) is on  this coming Saturday, May 24.  The schedule is in the Track Room or on www.pentrack.org   The signup is in the track room now. Your registration fee covers the entry into this meet.

2. The one day Pentathlon (for ages 9 and over) and Weight Pentathlon (ages 14 and over) is on Sunday, May 25 in Sidney. The signup for both is in the Track Room. Your registration fees cover these events.  Both contribute to VIAA points and the 4 meets necessary to be able to get a large rosette ribbon at the end of the season.

A Pentathlon is when an athlete does five events:  High Jump, Long Jump, Shot put, Sprint Hurdles, and 800m.  Rarely is an athlete good in all of these events.  More often they are fair at all events, or pretty good at 3 of them. Athletes score points on their performance in each of the five events, which are added together for their final score.  It is a fun event, and there are many athletes in our club who would do well at the pentathlon.  There is a Provincial Pentathlon in Whiterock for ages 9-14 on June 21, so this is a great lead up to that event.

Those throwers ages 14 and over who are interested in the Weight Pentathlon should talk to Denise about it.

3. The signup and schedule for the Duncan meet (June 7-8) is in the Track Room already. It is a sticker meet for most athletes. We would like many of our club athletes to attend this meet, so we will be organizing some hotel sharing and car-pooling to enable this….more info next week.

4.  Those athletes ages 14-15 who want to try out for the BCSummer Games zone team can get more information from  Dave Sherlock.  The registration deadline for Summer Games athletes is May 31, so please talk to Dave soon.

5. Is anybody interested in organizing a Track Club entry into the July 1 Canada Day parade?  We have not done it before, but they have called me about it several times.

6. If you take any digital pictures at any meets, please send them to me or Dave as we always need them for the paper and awards.

7. Parent help is still needed moving the high jump mats at every practice (unless it’s raining).  Thanks for the extra help at practice on Thursday when Dave, Jill and Anna were away.
